Initiating Process Group

The Initiating Process Group starts the project venture by defining the purpose, goals and requested outcome. This is further refined by defining the initial scope of work as well as financial estimates.  This will enable internal and external stakeholders to not only be identified but also allow the draft of the project charter and stakeholder register. The key to this process is for the project manager to be able to align stakeholder's expectations for the project outcome with the overall purpose of the project. It is critical during the initiating process to ensure the vision of the project is well defined and aligned with company strategic goals and objectives. An effective tool for this process group can be an S.W.O.T analysis, where strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats are properly identified for the particular project. Once the initiating process data is ready, the project sponsor or approval authority will make the determination to continue, delay or discontinue the project.
