Portfolio Matrix

The table below displays the “Project Management Process Groups and Knowledge Areas Mapping” matrix, found in the Project Management Body of Knowledge, (PMBOK® Guide) Fifth Edition, Table 3-1 on page 61. The table maps the forty-seven project management processes to their corresponding Knowledge Area. In addition, the table associates the forty-seven processes to ten knowledge areas known as Project Integration Management, Project Scope Management, Project Time Management, Project Cost Management, Project Quality Management, Project Human Resource Management, Project Communications Management, Project Risk Management, Project Procurement Management, and Project Stakeholders Management.

The chart below displays the "Process Management Process Interactions", found in the Project Management Body of Knowledge, (PMBOK® Guide) Fifth Edition, Figure 3-3, page 53. The chart clarifies the five phases of a project life cycle. There are a total of forty-seven processes that land under these five process groups known as Initiating - defining the need for the project and obtaining commitment to continue, Planning – developing a strategy for how to accomplish the work, Executing – carrying out the task identified in the strategy, Monitoring and Controlling – measuring the progress and taking corrective action if needed, and Closing – finishing the project and acquiring formal acceptance.
